The government does not pay you back, the property owner does. Or, if they don't, after a certain amount of time you can file for a new deed to the property, usually three years. It's a shit ton of legal work to actually have the county issue you a new deed based off of a tax lien. Then, you have the issue of what to do with whatever shitty property you just got and all its problems, and it will be very shitty with lots of problems or the old owner would have paid the taxes on it.
I understand what you're saying about needing less to be happy, it's good to be humble in your wants. But, cutting corners on things in life like a wife and community are not the things you need to cheap out on. Worst of all having no love and no love for God in your life is basically a direct path to misery.
