What Putin did is cementing great power status of Russia leaving it much less vulnerable for outside meddling when he leaves or dies, because there will be infighting and Russia is not quite stable yet (internal structural issue)

EU making Ukraine into a status and pride question for itself was a giant strategical mistake, it's hard to understate and will be written many books and scientific papers on this in the future. I would invest in this irl when opportunity rises
