I grew up in India and it wasn’t so bad. Where I grew up, open defecation was still common. As a child, I didn’t think of it as strange or shameful—it was just part of everyday life. Looking back, I remember it less as a sanitation issue and more as a feeling of innocence and freedom—kids don’t have the same sense of taboo that adults do. Of course, as an adult I recognize the health and sanitation problems around it. But in my memory, it represents a time when I felt close to nature and free of social pressure.
