I've been thinking a lot about gratitude as the mother of all virtues. And I think I'm right in saying this: you would give me everything you own in 25 years' time to be the age you are now and as healthy as you are right now. And I think it's a really interesting meditation. If you had a time machine, if you were 30 years in the future and you could be this healthy, feel this good, and be this age again, you’d give up everything you own materially at that future point to come back here.

Just take that in for a minute.

Japan is the only country that got rich without getting fat. Only 4.5% of Japanese people are obese, compared to 26% in Britain and 42.5% in the United States. 70% of Americans are either obese or overweight.

The first thing you might think when you hear that is, “It must just be genetic.” But we know that’s not true because in the late 19th century, lots of Japanese people moved to Hawaii. There’s now a settled Japanese population in Hawaii, people who’ve been there for four or five generations. And they’re almost as fat as other Hawaiians. So, when the environment changes, Japanese people become obese like everyone else.

I went to a school called Koenji School, which takes kids from ages 5 to 18. I remember asking some of the kids what their favorite food was. The first kid I asked said, “My favorite food is broccoli.” I was Like riiiight. The third one said, “I like white rice.” I turned to Himari, my translator, and asked, “Are these kids trolling me?” Like seriously, broccoli and white rice? And she just looked kind of puzzled. Every Japanese person I asked said the same thing:

“We teach our children to like healthy food. Don’t your children like healthy food?”

Most of my life I've preferred healthy food. Only reason I'm fat is I went through a phase of just getting all my food delivered because I was too depressed to cook and clean. Im doing a bit better now and eating better but still struggling to motivate myself to exersize.
At least I'm not struggling to not kill myself tho I guess

So really, your happiness is: Your quality of life minus envy. That's how happy you are. And it's easy to look at everyone else and how they are doing and not take pleasure in what you have.

People had hot showers 50 years ago but it get what you mean.
My life is pretty comfy so I'm not really complaining I just think if I took better care of myself and maybe tried a bit harder to socialize it'd improve my life :)
