>>23427523I think its because on a load of English language BBS or similar sites people would do shit like post an image of themself or even sign posts with their full name which moot didn't want people to do, the whole point of the name field is to use a tripcode not to write an online handle anyway, when the site first started out everyone used a tripcode like people on futaba channel still do to this day.
