What happened? Because it was pretty common for middle-aged people to pack on a few pounds, society didn't immediately notice people getting fatter from all our food being stuffed with corn syrup.
Even if society had noticed sooner, it still would've been mostly middle-aged married people who got fat, and because theyre already married they weren't in the dating market anyway.
By the time obesity had made its way into children our society had already become accepting of obesity. Society now views obesity as just another step in life. Not a matter of "if" but a matter of "when".

the obesity thingo started with city dwellers in the mid-80's. at least I can say it with absolute certainty for my home city with confidence. also a warning, 40 years ago wasn't the 60's.
