Your name was really good but mostly cause of the art style and atmosphere that is unique to anime, I can't see how they'll transfer that to to live action. The concept really isn't original either

Seems fair. I definitely do like the art and I think that's his biggest selling point. The stories certainly aren't anything new but I think he does a fairly decent job at showing emotional scenes.

5cm per second isn't for everyone, but it does hit really deep for some people. If you aren't one of them, then that's too bad. No one can say that about a jew jew movie. He'll never come close to catching the feelings that 5cm evokes in anyone, all his stuff is made to sell, not to connect.

What exactly hit you deep on 5cm? I found it slow and non sensical. Maybe you have to relate to it? The feeling of missed opportunities, moving out and losing contact with people or w/e?

His works aren't for everyone, but they really resonate with those they effect (eg kimi no na wa blowing up the box office since people would go watch it 5 or 6 times).
Also, Shinkai doesn't claim to be or even want to be considered a master. He's extremely humble and understands that his art is just a job.

Yeah I was thinking something like that. I get that if you don't care about the characters or the situation in episode 1 then the rest of the movie won't be enjoyable, but I felt that Shinkai did a wonderful job capturing the stress and anxiety. It wasn't overdone like you see in so many other movies trying to create that sense of urgency that is only in your head.

I guess that was why I didn't like it. I don't think about that kind of stuff, I never had a missed love and I never had to move out. The entire movie was alien and over the top for me.

5cm per second is defiantly a hard movie to like just because if it does resonate with you than damn its a downer and if it doesn't, then well you'll probably just forget about it.
Maybe I shouldn't say hard to like, because lots of people praise it, but hard to feel like you are having fun when you are watching it.
