something like ubuntu might not let you change/customize things you want/NEED to change, at which point you're screwed
something like gentoo might take hours to customize, and more hours spent fixing the regular obscure errors
i think arch strikes a sane balance between those two, and for that reason "just werks" better than other distros overall
