If you were indian there is nothing you could've done other than ignore, if you try to be polite they think you'll eventually give in and if you become rude, you hurt their ego and they will try to do terrible shit to you
It's not just a 1 time game for them, they will literally camp outside where they first saw you and do the same thing again and again and no you can't even contact the police or ask your friends or family to help you because there people are literally insane, they are capable of doing terrible things against you and your family, they don't fear anything, only option is to ignore. Same goes with if they try to provoke you get in a fight with you, my father's brother once got in a fight with people like that and you'd think that because he has more money and power and because the Dalits are all poor skinny 4'11 little cockroaches, he'd win but you can't win against those people, he had to say sorry to them eventually
