when i was a kid, i used to picture the lungs as big empty sacks inflating/deflating
i remember when i learned they were more like big tree structures of alveoli, when i was like 12
when i realized that, it made it seem stupid to breathe in anything other than air
they just seem like they'd be fragile

i guess whatever happened is more toxic than just damaging the lungs, though?

this happens from welding galvanized steel and its basically zinc poisoning but the human body is pretty good at processing zinc compounds
more zinc than the body can handle at one time

when i do extended fasting or otherwise enter ketosis, i always end up with acetone in my sweat for like 24 hours, and usually end up with these really annoying rashes from it
they look extremely severe but they're mostly just very itchy
first time it happened i thought it was stevens-johnson syndrome & got spooked lol

yeah but i think the acetone rash is a separate thing somehow
acetone is a byproduct of metabolizing ketones
but i think it stops appearing in sweat after 24-48 hours into ketosis, for some reason
i think ketoacidosis has other symptoms

If you are welding alloys or galvanized I would suggest welding under air.

When i was in the military we had gas masks and would do yearly mask fit checks and CBRN training. Since tommy helps the gov make battleships i assume they enforce yearly things like making sure your breathing protection fits and works but i guess having it available for use is mandatory but actual usage isnt, hence why tommy got sick

is it a full face mask or just a breathing aparatus? If its a full face mask i wonder if you could buy just a respirater (write it off on tax returns as a work expense) and use the filter they give you
