throughout their psychological development, they'll naturally oscillate between preferring mum, or preferring dad
and as they get older, and they start to become more self-actualised people in their own right, they'll develop a relationship with both parents on an individual level, beyond the instinctive parent-offspring bond
any man whose ego is so fragile he can't bear to not be the consistent favourite probably shouldn't have a family until he first matures
fathers build strong relationships through consistency, warmth, presence, strength, knowledge, guidance, levity, humour, etc., not insecurity, ego fragility, or instinctual biological determinism
they're usually not caregivers in the sense the mother is—they hopefully don't lactate—but they're caregivers in a sense which will be much more appreciated as the child ages
