My third week into high school, my math teacher asked me to see him after class. He asked if I was in the right class, which was super confusing because 1) I was 13 and didn’t know my ass from my elbow and 2) it’s not like I chose which math class to be in.
He explained that I seemed to be way ahead of the rest of the class, and was curious about my grades in middle school, how I liked math, and so on. He was shocked that I got straight A’s in the subject, and explained that the class he was teaching was Algebra 1A, a decelerated class that split Algebra 1 over two terms. It was for kids who had trouble with math.
He set up a meeting with a guidance counselor, and eventually my parents got involved. Everyone was in agreement; I shouldn’t be in that class.
So why was I stuck with the niggers (the school was like 15% black but they all ended up in this class)? Well, as it turns out the classes are filled alphabetically. Since my last name starts with a letter toward the end of the alphabet, I was placed later. Algebra 1 was full, so they just put me in 1A.
A lack of chairs. I was robbed out of an entire year of high school math because of a lack of chairs. Public schools have gotten better since then… right?
