I would have thought that once anyone gets to the age where they learn the origin of religions, they would quickly realize that the gods people worship were all created by primitive mere fallible men thousands of years ago, and cannot literally be real.

But no, billions of people continue to believe supernatural things like gods or souls are real to this very day, completely oblivious to the fact that nothing happens after they die.

Some people rob themselves and others of pleasure and happiness for much of their lives, thinking they will be rewarded for their discomfort in "the next life."

There is no next life. That is the very reason why you should not waste this one, because it is the only life you will ever get.
