You can use dd on window's CMD, (look it up for yourself).
for an old operating system and whilst being a total beginner I suggest you use an LTS since they precompile binaries for a large array of systems and may support your old system.
When people talk about hardware incompatibility with linux they're mostly talking about having a nvidia graphics card, if you see your system's architecture you most likely won't have any problems at all.
Choose Ubuntu or a bloatless flavor like Lubuntu or similiar if you want go also play steam on it.
