Most violent crimes are comitted by hot headed people in the heat of the moment. If you snap in a gun-free nation nothing is stoping you from grabing your gun and shooting the fucker.
Most criminals are desperate people who do it because they think its the only way, they rob small stores or people alone in the street, if guns are available they will obviously grab one, if they are not availabe they will probably use a knife or just physical intimidation, going through all the trouble to get a gun is not worth it.
And if the robber doesn't have a gun he might beat you or slash you should you resist, but he will not often kill you, if he has a gun he will just shoot you, he wont bother aiming for the leg.
Also the "guns put everyone on the same field" argument is a myth. If someone is planning on killing you they will just shoot you before you notice, if its an assault, they will shoot you as soon as you reach for your gun.
To defend ones home is also not viable, since homebreakers only break in empty homes, unless they are breaking in with the intention to kill you which is pretty fucking rare for the commun citizen.
The only event were citizens with guns is remotely helpful is during mass shootings, but still no-one will want to risk being the hero, if someone tries to be the hero, again unless he is a space marine, he will probably miss, get killed or even kill more innocents accidentally, even when someone manages to kill the mass shooter enough damage has been done already, so not much difference from having the police doing it instead.
My point is, banning guns will stop hot-headed civilians from excalating theviolence to lethal levels, sure it wont stop serious, experienced, cold-blooded criminals, but agaisnt them, a gun is not going to help you either since they will shoot first.
