I took off the plastic label and the next day I boiled some water to make tea and I couldn't open the fucking door.

sorry, i mean why do they need locks if there are easier ways for children to harm themselves with house hold appliances?
what about kettles or toasters? kids can burn or even kill themself with the latter?
the only way I can see a kid killing themself is if they can fit inside one and somehow turn it on and be cooked alive

I have no idea, I only found out from the sticker on the front as I was setting it up. Googled it, there's a new USA law from 2024 that microwaves must lock and require an extra button push to unlock the button that opens the door. On mine, I have to push the 0 button. That unlocks the button you push to spring open the door.
Maybe because microwaves are very much an unattended cooking appliance and a kid could get in there, pull out the super-boiled water and dump it on himself.
I remember in the 2000s when people were using distilled water to make hot chocolate or something and the water would explode when they put the spoon in because there are no impurities in distilled water to make it boil or something.
All in all, it's a dumb law and a most mild inconvenience.

I use a saucepan on the stove to boil water for tea. I never got around to getting an electric hot water kettle or a stovetop tea kettle.

they are for ease of use, you dont have to worry about a hot cup, as well as this you can just fill it up for the day then hit 1 button and you have hot water.
unless you have one of those weird american coffee machines idk why you wouldnt get one desu

My microwave was broken and nasty for a long time, so I didn't use it for fresh clean water. I might have to revisit that with the new one though.
You are supposed to use fresh COLD water from the tap heated on the stove and not double boil it though because in early 20th century England, rats would get into the hot water tank and drown so the hot water might be unclean and this obviously applies to all of us.

yeah thats why you dont drink the water from anything other than their sink, but thats for older houses.
like other than putting the water tanks where rats live who would think its a good idea to put something as heavy as water in the roof?
