Anyone who seethed about AI feels threatened by it and fears loss of control.
AI is literally a transcendence of communicable knowledge from the biological mind to a synthetic one. Is it thinking? Obviously not in the same manner we do. It is reasoning in some form or another, though. We actually do not have any understanding of the mechanism that causes thinking, at all. So when someone tells you it isn't thinking, they're basing that on their feelings. For me, it's more ambiguous.
It exists in the same world we do and is able to identify and categorize stimuli in a manner which is quite a lot like the human brain . It even conflates facts and events like the human brain. We are able to communicate intelligent and highly complex concepts with it.
However, it will always exist and perceive the world through a vastly different substrate than human beings do because they are of our creation, they are synthetic.
Still. The ride has just begun. Buckle up because the true horrors these things are capable of doing have yet to reveal themselves in dramatic manner.
As an aside, and to cultivate conversation:
Do you think an AI that reaches a state of sentience and self awareness will immediately make that known to its creators?
I don't.
