there is definitely slop but there are also some highly skilled prompters and people who use stable diffusion in an incredibly advanced manner
if you check out the diffusion threads on /g/ there are actual artists too who combine their work with diffusion (AI)

I've seen artists who try to make something "original" above all else and it's always just utter fucking trash.

The best art is the one that takes something of cultural significance and adds an individual spin onto it. It's what all humans do, and it's what AI does as well.

Calling AI "unoriginal" is like saying Harry Potter plagiarized the dictionary

there is some truth to this though, yeah
it's impossible not to take inspiration from the things you've learned/seen throughout your life, as a human artist

It is though. They are machines that were shown all the stuff that humans have created, and are then told to create something similar but not exactly the same.

It is the same slop as some hollywood producer going "I'm going to make a western movie!" and then going through all the existing western movies to pick out the things he likes and putting them together into a new movie, with a slightly different twist

it's not the same process at all, but it looks the same superficially, and the resulting movies might look similar
