The term "Kievan Rus'" was not used by the people of that time; it was coined by historians in the 19th century to describe the East Slavic state that existed from the late 9th to the mid-13th century. During its existence, the state was simply referred to as "Rus'" or "the land of Rus'" by its inhabitants.
