It happened in Soviet times. Drilled for natural gas. Stumbled on underground cavity. Drilling site collapsed. To limit spread of gas, and to reduce risk. They had idea to ignite it. With idea that gas will burn out in few weeks. Like 40 years later, crater still burns.
