a few reasons, I think
I'd been the one to find all the evidence leading up to it—she was hiding bloody bandages and things like that—so it was one of those deaths that you're already primed for before it happens
another reason was that at that point I was still having to try to convince my parents that she wouldn't be found alive, which they were convinced of, and I'm always slow to grieve even when I have closure and the time to process it all
and another might be that the world was at a really precarious juncture during the whole thing, with a couple of major UK cities being destroyed in a limited nuclear exchange—we'd all only narrowly survived a small airburst by sheltering in a suspiciously-robust blood donation clinic—so there might've been a degree of having to keep a stiff upper lip
