Modern leftism, after Marx has transferred the struggle into the cultural sphere, as they believed after the failures of Marxist socialism in the West, that the prevailing culture protects the system against socialist revolutions.
So the left, through Gramsci, frankfurt school, critical theorists, intersectionalists, wokeists, and so forth, has begun trying to take over, subvert and destroy culture, all under the intent to destabilize the system and rob it of its protection against socialist revolution. To ensure that they can gain power over time, as the system destabilizes and ends up in an inevitable crisis.
This is what the culture war is.
