>>24013991>Nah, I knew this crowd back in college. People hate hipsters because they are the epitome of rich kids that want to LARP as poor street kidsNo, he's right.
Hipster hate is a meme, because the people who most vocally hated hipsters were hipsters themselves. I was around at the time and my favorite way to trigger hipsters was to point out the the tell tale sign of a hipster was their vocal disgust and hatred for hipsters. "I'm not like THOSE people, my quirky styles and interests are unique and authentic."
The give away is that hipsterism was all about the quest for authenticity, and all hipster hate is a dig at their supposed inauthenticity.
Case in point:
Your own critique is that hipsters were rich kids trying to look like street kids. Which logically presumes that street kids dressed, acted, and looked like hipsters, and from a logical perspective were obviously also hipsters as well. To put it another way, dismissing hipsters as rich poseurs emulating street kids is the equivalent of dismissing punks as rich poseurs emulating street kids. Obviously there were rich kids rebelling against daddy who ran away to live in a punk squat, but to pretend that everyone living in a punk squat was rich is obviously ridiculous.
