The reason why US citizens say I'm 5% Cherokee and my grandmother on my father's side was jewish.

Is because of space.

There is a lot more space in the USA and mobility between them is easier. They share a flag, pledge allegiance to it, share a language, share a constitution. They grow up with it.

The EU by comparison is more difficult. Every country speaks a different language, has a different culture, different laws and there is no suprastucture that takes priority over their nationality.

The US is a nation of immigrants. They are more mobile across states, they are less grounded to a community related to a location (grosso modo).

They are more nomadic, because there is less paperwork involved if they want to move from one state to another.

If they are nomadic, they need to hinge themselves to a bloodline or some history. In Europe, nobody gives a rat's ass what blood or heritage their mom's dad on their granddaughters kid's son had, because people are more stuck to their local communities.

There is no EU, but there are Europeans. Ask a EU citizen to say what their anthem is and none will be able to answer. Everyone knows the USA anthem is the Star Spangled Banner. Some mutts may even know some of the words.

I forgot my point, but yeah, the 5% Cherokee is also moral grandstanding, you're supposed to think of being mixed as if its an accomplishment. In Europe, they're all mutts too, but if you're not nobility, you don't give a a shit about what part of you came from where.
