arguably wealth/power IS what corrupts, especially when those things aren't earned or merited, and the cause is precisely the corruption (loyalty above competency and/or motives detrimental to the governing process) of institutions and individuals AND regardless of the type of structure, the people being governed either place excess trust in the system OR resignation and acceptance "of their fate", either of which are continued until the status-quo, or basic survival, becomes untenable, this is when you get a conflict of some sort. strife engenders gratitude, gratitude is what births a civilization and invigorates the human spirit
