As an American I think we are completely dishonest about ourselves. There are some cool people in the US but you will always be surrounded by people with some of the worst attitudes you could ever imagine. Just as easily as someone could go out of their way to be nice to you for no reason someone will also go out of their way to be a dick to you. My friend has mail order bride (joking but she's from Estonia) and she said something that made me feel genuinely sad. Just "hows the fishing, catch anything?" type of shit and after he left she asked us who that was and we said we had no idea.
