Why is this garbage meme rifle so popular?

>lots of failure-prone parts

I could understand if it got one or two gubment contracts, but how is it the most popular platform in the world? It's objectively worse than basically every other modern rifle on the market, and calling it "modern" is a stretch since the design is literally from the 60s.
