In 1790when the Constitution & amendments were being written 'RELIGION' meant you Christian Denomination.
Freedom of Religion meant your right to choose any Christian denomination in America, because the colonies had until the advocated 1 Denomination for that colony, some allowed more than one, but ONLY RI allowed Any Denomination in the colony!
So, writers of the Constitution specifically stated that all Americans have the Right to choose ANY Christian denomination, so there won't be any states fighting over it & to allow all Americans to freely exercise their Right to Travel amongst the various states & feel free to settle anywhere & practice their Christian Beliefs there!
NEVER was it meant to protect paganism, islam, or any kind of Indian Tribal beliefs or African Voodoo!
There actually were laws passed backing this up.
Including throwing the Mormons out of Illinois/Missouri! - It was, is totally incongruant with Christianity!
