To make a simple pragmatic example of degeneracy we can take a look at how art have changed these last few years. Once upon a time artists strived to outperform previous masters in terms of skill, expression and craftmansip where the boundary of what can be achieved kept being pushed. This trend eventually stopped for the sake of quick attention and simple cash grab because effort seemed to be more of a burden than part of the journey in creating something new. This sad development was justified with the argument that beaty is in the eye of the beholder.
Apply this mindset to other aspects of society and you start to notice people generally care more for short term pleasures over hard work to make ourselves better both as individuals and as a society. This is also justified as "if it doesn't bother you then why should you care?"
Since our "system" is neglected due to people not wanting to be the ones to make an effort it slowly withers away until we are too weak to protect what we have. At this stage you are powerless to defend yourself against those that did not shy away from the burden of effort
