They're both great. Betterman (the first one)'s interesting for being one of the few anime to combine horror with mecha.
Brigadoon (the second one)'s one of my favourite anime of all time. It's extremely hard to classify because it says "fuck it" to genres/tropes and as a result becomes the strangest mecha of all time that doesn't know if it wants to be a cute moe shoujo or a tragic depressing seinen.

They technically take place in the same world but they're not sequels to eachother and their stories, characters and themes are entirely unconnected.
There's also GaoGaiGar, and strangely Samurai Flamenco which also take place in the same world, with Samurai Flamenco being the strange one because unlike Betterman, Brigadoon and Gao which all came out within 3 years of eachother, Samurai Flamenco came out almost two decades later.
