OP then posts the update to the map showing where you all start, then you reply to that post to say "Fill the rest of Germany" for instance. Your post numbers determine how much of that gets filled. Like lets say the last number of your post is a 5, you might end up filling 3 territories in Germany, or if its dubs you'll fill 10.
Then you wait for the next map update to take your next turn, one per map update. You're free to form alliances to try and survive longer. For attack and defense, it works the same way, higher numbers, dubs/trips/etc. allow you to attack/defend to take/prevent taking of territories.
Some games have additionally rules such as country bonuses, factories, capitals, etc. Basically that just allow you to get extra added stuff each turn during each map update and those are as simple as saying build factory, or controlling an entire country and just keeping up with what the bonus number is.
