Originally the stripes were just stripes. The only significance were the colors chosen (red, white and blue), as well as the stars and golden fringe. It wasn't until later on that we threw in the whole "The stripes represent the original thirteen colonies" stuff. Why that is? I don't know. It's just a flag.

I think originally both the stars and stripes represented the states and after we realized we were gonna have way more than 13 we brought it back to 13 stripes with just the stars representing the states

but flags are much more than just flags they're representations of Your nation if your country.
If your flags rubbish then people are less likely to use it in public situations Which lessens national pride.
Not saying the US flag is bad just that it could have been better.

But .. how would you have designed it? Keep in mind you'd still have to keep the colors red, white and blue, as well as using the stars and having a golden fringe. Those, to me, are what make the flag more than how many stars and stripes are on it.

It also comes down to that non of 13 colonies liked each other, they all pretty much wanted to be their own nation. The hated each other so much that the original american constitution, the articles of confederation, failed. maybe if the 13 colonies wanted to be more united, our flag would be different.

I agree the Betsy Ross flag was better, but we made those stars representing states and we sorta got ourselves stuck with that mess.
Well, the star initially was about representing the "heavens" and some "divine goal" for peace or something. Something that clearly hasn't really happened very well here since we have a serious hate-boner for virtually everyone and everything (including ourselves).

Let's just talk for a minute about what the stars on each banner look like.
On the current flag the stars look Packed in like a manufactury product, symbol of conformity.
The old flag has the stars In a circle, circles are known for being a unifying symbol as well as being reminiscent of the round table, a Gathering of equals, where no-one matters more than anyone else.
