The thing is, humans give story, fable, and avatarhood to anything we cannot explain.
Stimulant users fall victim to this often. They're called the "shadow people". I've seen em too.
But I know what they are, so they don't fuck with my head like they do the average idiot.
They're just thoughts and dreams taken form. A brain, hyper-excited on dopamine and norepinephrine, is forced to think or even dream while awake, and not knowing exactly what he's dealing with at the time, he gives these thoughts and dreams form, generally human, made up of shadows(because at the time the norep agonism causes the brain to more intensely notice shadows than light), in an effort to familiarize himself with what he's seeing.
Even if you're like me and know what they are, because I have no 100% control over my brain(no one does for vital reasons), even I can still see the shadow people. But knowing what they are makes it easy to deal with.
