The entire design of the site is to create echochambers, where posts that the majority of users don't like (i.e. are downvoted) are automatically hidden. Not only this, but they have a magic internet point system known as 'karma' that actively rewards groupthink and punishes descent, and people actually care about this too. If you look at a controversial post on there you're bound to find at least 1 reply "was sacrificing your karma worth making this post".
These features attract a specific kind of person, who wants to be spoonfed and have their opinions validated. This is what makes Reddit so insufferable, because it creates hugboxes by design.
