Back then 4chan and the internet as a whole didn't give a shit (dare I say, it was NOT 'srs bzns'), you could say whatever you want as long as you weren't a butthurt faggot about your opinion --tumblr and /pol/ serve as two opposing examples for this, both are hard pressed at pushing their own opinions onto others-- and if you were, you'd become the next lolcow to be milked for lulz.
Sure we made fun of niggers and faggots, but we also made fun of every other stereotype there is, it was done for our enjoyment with no ulterior motivation behind it.
The downward spiral started when people began taking this place seriously and the rise of the 'I did it ironically' crowd only accelerated the deterioration. I miss when /a/ wasn't in a constant state of anal discomfort, you could hop on for either semi-serious discussion or some nonsensical fun, now it's just filled with stuck up holier than thou asshats attempting to turn it into something it will never be and the opposing faggots trying to force fun threads that will never take off due to the previous group.
