Pretty much nothing. The entire economy is based around travelling back and forth between Newfoundland and Fort McMurray (about 3,800km). The job market is so bad this is not only seen as viable, but completely normal.

It has one of, if not the, oldest population in the country as anyone young enough to leave, does. There's basically nothing for people in the 20-30 age group to do besides collect unemployment, get drunk, and drive around on quads.

Well I've never been to West Virginia, but I imagine the Newfoundland climate is much, much worse, and it's considerably more rural than just about any place in the continental US.

I remember waking up one morning, looking out my parent's window and seeing a moose scratching itself on a tree in the front yard. Half a km behind their place is bear country, and we had to stop walking the dogs in the woods because of coyotes.

We have a lot in common with the Newf.
They have a very distinct culture based on bologna and moonshine.
Fishing and Moose Hunting and Seal bashing are common pastimes.
Immigrants are welcomed, but they never show up.
They're all really nice but may BTFO ya for no reason and then share a shot of moonshine with ya right after.

I resent the gas huffing remark. That's Labrador. Anyhow, the point is well taken. Biggest thing that killed the provincial economy was the loss of the railway. When all the major industries are mining, logging, and derivatives thereof, trying to transport bulk cargo over shitty roads in routinely awful weather is just not economical. A load of wood is not worth as much as the fuel burned to transport it plus the driver's time, and the only mining that makes any kind of sense is either gold or something that is situated right on the coast so the stuff can be transferred to ship as soon as possible.
