The government has vested interest in influencing it's populous to eat and live healthy. That's also why food safety standards are higher in the EU.
On the flip-side we stifle innovation.
In some ways our system only works because we can leech off of the medical innovations of the US.
Similar thing with our military. We can only get away with having basically no functioning military because the US is practically world police and spends innumerable amounts of dosh on it's military.
