It, and dark matter, are called dark because we can't observe them, ie. we can't see them, hence dark. It's still just a type of energy though.
Also it's pointless to talk about anything outside of the observable universe, let alone the entire universe, as we cannot possibly know anything about it. And I mean cannot; information cannot travel faster than C, hence it is impossible to know of anything outside the observable universe, hence the name.
