those are little shards of obsidian on the edges. they were super sharp and brittle like glass and supposedely they made wounds so gruesome and painful, most aztec conflicts they were used in didn't end in the guy being killed by them, but in him surrendering to become a slave. they had a martial art that involved carefully positioning themselves around each other to make the perfect hit and when one guy became exposed to a hit and knew it, he'd just surrender instead of being mauled by these things.
