The record label execs specifically design the music to be watered down background music with a pretty face on the CD cover so they can market it. It's shit and I hate it, but it's the truth.
There are plenty of good 100% organic homegrown American bands that rock hard, but they either sell out or die in obscurity. Some of the poor bastards manage to do both. The truly successful "bands" and "musicians" are the mass-market corporate lapdogs. A mind-numbing majority don't even write their own material.
And, let's be honest, most of the world's not doing much better than the States on that front.
