If you're in your 20's it can be a fun year or couple of years. you definitely will have a different perspective on things afterwards. But it depends on if you get a tightass school or a decent one, and where you end up. Sadly the availability of smartphones with GPS and dictionaries has taken a lot of the adventure out of it.
if you are chill about it and roll with the punches you can have a good time, try to avoid the major national chains and go for a local school, that's my advice anyway

It's fun. I wasn't a teacher there, but I helped brazilian kids that just arrived in Japan to understand the classes. I became friends with most of them and I had a lot of free time.

Buncha families quit after '08 and brazilian immigration kinda stopped for a while, but those families are coming back now and new ones are coming in too. Japan is a popular place for brazilians because the government treats them well and the Japanese don't seem to hate them.

I got arrested when I was 18 for theft and have a misdemeanor on my record so am basically disqualified from teaching in Japan as a result. When I found this out I wanted to kill myself. I'm 29 and doing well for myself, making 6 figures etc, but I still look back and yearn for just a year abroad teaching and it makes me so sad sometimes.

It's pretty difficult to do in Japan since you and a million other westerners are competing. You can have a bachelor's degree in virtually anything but you'd most likely be teaching very young children. You have to have an English/teaching degree to even be considered for teaching at a college or even their form of high school. It's one of those things you do for a year or two for the experience. I would do it, but I got a DWAI back when i was like 19 and the japs are very strict about any record (and rightfully so) before working there. It's incredibly easy to go teach English in China but the quality of life would be shittier. They tend to send you to a southern (2nd or 3rd tier) city where most people cruise around on mopeds and eat at crowded street food areas and you'll see kids taking leaks eveywhere.

I'm planning to return to Japan next year to teach English. I've helped a few people here in the states with their English and it was pretty fun. But one of my biggest reasons is the fact that they are sending total fucking freaks to represent America. For every normal person that doesn't apply, someone like pic related will.
