My friend and I were talking about this a week or so ago. We arrived that things truly started going downhill when /pol/ was reborn from /new/'s ashes, gamergate, and finally the election. Each caused a huge influx in bitter, self-serious posters that started branching into other formerly teeny boards with a small quantity of posters that helped make OC, and new posters there were integrated more or less seamlessly into the board culture. This bitter self-seriousness ruined the post-modern complete lack of sincerity that characterized 4chan pre 2011/2.
Another tragedy was the split of /b/ into 4 or 5 containment boards, depending on definition. I remember 2009/2010 /b/ was a constant spew of shit that was of below average quality with the occasional gem. It was fun to participate in the anarchy that a bunch of different factions participated in. The split of /soc/, /mlp/, /s4s/, and the revival of /r9k/ kind of drained these factions, even if they were fucking irritating to have to deal with constantly. It removed the anarchy and postmodernism.
Each rapid influx eroded unique board character and a sense of community. I was in a thread yesterday on /x/ talking about who /x/ should take to the winter ball, and multiple people were calling us autistic and cringey Previously, that was a staple of board cultures. It's now very hard to get tight close-knit board communities now. The general feeling of "we're the outcasts" has eroded as well.
The only way to "fix" 4chan is to remove it from google search results, remove /pol/, and turn back time to 2011.
