You can easily say you were self employed during that time. Most of us won't bother actually finding out or not since most self employed individuals who return to an interview have just closed their failed business. It's hard for us to prove otherwise so we kind of ignore it.

It depends on the level of responsibility the position you are applying for carries. I very rarely contact previous employers especially if the applicant is coming from small tight knit places where "put in the good word" rules. Its sort of pointless.

Arctic welding gigs can be pretty comfy.

I only work half the year but make more in that half year than I spend.

Never worked in management and honestly don't want to until I get too old/fat to go out. But these are good fields.
