He did not protect his head well, but kept it far back enough in his stance, that his slow unskilled opponent could not capitalize on it, even with minimum head movement. He set the straight right up with a jab, it was very telegraphed and kinda slow, it was boxing 101. His opponent was a bum that knew nothing about how to fight. Most people in general cannot fight their way out of a wet paper bag, training boxing and wrestling will allow you to handle 99% of men on the planet 1on1 sufficiently, given you're not a manlet and/or obese. I highly recommend looking into either, or even better both, it may save your life or at least your teeth.
