Everyone knows that the reason why Trump won the US election was because his gaffe prone, publicity seeking tactics and hyper populist rhetoric got him way more TV and media exposure than any other candidate.
Couples with the anti-establishment sentiment that has brewed because of the slow recovery globally from the GFC which has seen the rise of the Golden Dawn and Syriza in Greece, Brexit, AFD in Germany, Macron's En Marche... and countless other non-establishment parties all across the world therefore a non-uniquely American phenomenon meant that Bernie Sanders had a better chance than Hilary.
The notion that any of this groundswell is pursuant on Russian intervention both means that Parliamentary/Representational Democracy is severely flawed and easily manipulated by foreign interests, begging the question of why bother at all (incidentally: if rich white men as the left likes to believe do have so much control, how come they couldn't out manoeuver Russian influence?) while conveniently eliminates the, particularly the American Media's responsibility for Trump's election while also excusing the Democrats from literally going against public wishes in selecting Bernie Sanders (okay, maybe we should ditch representational democracy if the Democrats chose Clinton over Sanders?).
Putin's previous advantage over the west was that Republican or Democrat, Conservative or Leftwing in any country he knew what he was dealing with - while he's probably savoring the fragmentation of traditional power, having unknown forces breaks rule no. 1 of conflict: know they enemy and know thyself. Putin is probably sweating b/c he can't predict Trump, while he could predict Clinton/Cruz/Bush and establishment candidates.
TL;DR - Everyone hated the establishment, and the media gave Trump leverage through overexposure. Russia was a bit player.
