>>3080618>>3080642Well, what I know best is Poland's history, obviously, so I may be a bit biased, but I always found stuff that happened in the East of Europe much more interesting than the West. That's dependant on preference I guess, both are interesting, just in different ways.
About the date 1795, just know that enormous Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth gave up all of its land to Prussia, Austria-Hungary and Prussia without even fighting. A lot of stuff lead to this, too much to tell you, the important thing is that we regained our independence only after 123 years (just to lose it again 21 years later).
>>3080726I mean, cumulatively. Like, not 50 years in a row, but adding all the years we were independent during that period:
1795-1918 - 123 years - not independent, under Prussia (later Germany), Austria-Hungary and Russia
1918-1939 - 21 years - independent
1939-1945 - 6 years - not independent, under Germany and USSR
1945-1989 - 44 years - falsely independent; a soviet satelite state
1989-now - 28 years - independent
