A modest lifestyle is a good one, hobbies are important too nowadays I feel. Actual master craftsman careers are disappearing, but it's still possible to find a lifetime of getting paid enough to do what you love. If that's not possible or you don't know what you love, I think it's best to find something you enjoy enough for employment, but try to find somewhere with good coworkers you can get along with. I don't think you should be chasing happiness like that. If everything you do is just an attempt to force a certain emotional state then you'll get too caught up in whether it's working or not to actually be happy.

This is very correct, I have friends nowadays who are so busy that when they have an entire weekend free they get stuck in this mentality of "I must have fun no matter what cost". It's usually quite stressful to have to deal with that.

I agree anon, getting off social media finally allowed me to stop focusing on what I didn't have and allowed me to see I had a lot that I am thankful for.

Although there is no nobility in being poor I do think maintaining work / life / family balance is more important than what it says on your paycheck.

I have an old ass audi 80 station wagon from 1994 that i paid 500 bucks for, and i fucking love it to death. It's scratched the fuck up and it has several dents and shit. But everything works on it, and ive never had a problem.

I can't imagine owning a fancy car, id be too afraid to drive it and id feel so bad if i bumped it into something

I don't know, I just can't get along well with other germans. I used to live in Finland, France and Japan, and it was GREAT, I used to have a lot of friends and in France I even had a girlfriend.
Now I am back here in germany working my ass of and having depressions.

I have an old 1990 Volvo 240 wagon that I drove all through high school and college, when I graduated I got a job where I had to drive to the office so I bought the Subaru Outback my dad was looking to sell because it had functional air conditioning, but I kept the Volvo. Now that I've changed jobs and rarely drive anymore I almost want to sell the Subaru and take the Volvo out of storage, but I have a hard time getting rid of anything I own.

I'm perfectly conditioned to interpret things as such, I apologize. I distract myself from everything but work with my hobbies, so a lack of love, friends, or social skills never really bother me too much. Idk about europeans as a whole, but scandinavians are very withdrawn and held back, and try not to get in eachothers way or invade others "private space". So sitting across from eachother on the same bench or standing 3 meters away from eachother on the bus stop is not uncommon.

We're not rude, or anti social, we just let each other be.

But for example when you are at a grocery store say "Have a nice day :--3 :))) and merry Christmas" to the cashier. It isn't really something we do here. Greet the cashier and say goodbye when you're leaving. It's not being rude, it's just sparing each other of dare i say banter?

Saying stuff like "have a good day" is just the same as "goodbye" honestly, nobody really means it and no one expects anyone to mean it. It's like saying "goodbye" instead of just "bye" I guess. But I do know what you mean about the vapid and empty conversation. People often here say things like "oh we really need to meet up for lunch sometime!" with no intentions of actually following through. It's a weird facade that you need to adopt to appear friendly here.

Sure most of the immigrants and refugees don't know how to behave, but that's exactly the same for many of my people.
For example: Have you ever joined a public discord server? THEY WON'T SPEAK ENGLISH!!!?!? That's just stupid and rude and last time a german talked to me in an english voice chat (with like 5 other europeans in it) in german I just felt like commiting genocide.

My mother moved back to Sweden with my father right after they married, she said it was incredibly jarring but actually really refreshing to not have to pretend to be some extroverted social butterfly. She was raised in the southern US which still has all those false promises ingrained in its culture to this day.

Just by watching my parents while growing up it's pretty apparent, my mother can strike up a conversation with nearly any stranger she meets while my father will only chooses to speak when he needs to say something or has something to contribute to a current conversation.

Understanding that if you can't change something that is bothering you that it is both a waste of time and energy to worry about it. If you can change it and it would lead to a better outcome, change it. Nothing worth doing is easy but the key I've found is that there's a weird balance to not giving a shit and caring just enough. Care about yourself and learn what isn't worth your time or energy.

This is all just my experience though and I'm still working through the mess you can call my life to get to a position where I can really enjoy it.
