as for the example you just gave, yeah, that's retarded and to be honest i haven't seen any people like that, except for gypsies.
being poor taught me how to cook, to organize my time, etc. and that's the case for most poor people i know. it forces you to improve yourself. maybe if you're talking street sweeper or janitor or supermarket cashier level poverty, what you said would apply.
