Your government is one of the only ones possibly in the entire world that has got its shit together. To my knowledge, you have the highest represenativeness score for your elected representatives outside of Switzerland (a direct democracy) and possibly New Zealand. You have a multi-party democracy so that every election isn't a hate fuck and your mandatory voting means people appeal to the center rather than to extremists to "get out the vote".
Your schools and hospitals, despite being a socialists wet dream, are ironically more market driven, private, and "capitalist" than anything that can be found in America (there is no price competition in American hospitals nor incentive to be competitive- there is in Australia, despite single payer healthcare).
Your citizens are pretty well educated in civics (judging by my wife) and your government doesn't run a deficit- indeed you save up a surplus in order to weather a business cycle like any sane household would budget.
To be fair, the reason you are not dysfunctional is probably because your politics are too unimportant for the world's sociopaths to spend their time infiltrating and corrupting. But nevertheless, with ever increasing shame I find it harder and harder to justify to my wife why we haven't moved there yet, save that I genuinely swore an oath as a young man I'd stay and make my country better and not abandon it.
But a country is her people, not her government or borders. And each day, the people of this country make it increasingly clear to me: "You are not one of us".
I'd never be an Australian either. Just a yank without a country. But at least I'd get a bunch of free stuff living in Australia.
