Religion is a front for the organizations, though I'll admit that there's the odd individual that actually does believe in the kool aid the cult is worshipping. But if it wasn't for the misguidance of the people at the top of the chain, the deaths wouldn't have been religious; they'd have happened because them dying benefits whatever they're fighting for. Desert storm wasn't religious. The Alamo wasn't religious. The Haulocost pretended to be religious. Not even Orleans, the situation with Joan of Arc was originally religious. She made it religious, but Orleans was going under siege either way, don't you think?
Those people would have died either way. Sorry if it seems edgy or pessimistic, but that's the conclusion I'm coming to given the evidence.
